Heinlein Group strengthens the open source ecosystem in Germany with the founding of OpenCloud GmbH

The Heinlein Group today announces the operational launch of OpenCloud GmbH. The company was founded in September 2024 to offer secure and GDPR-compliant file management and file sharing at enterprise level with the open source solution "OpenCloud".

OpenCloud will be available in the first quarter of 2025 and is aimed primarily at companies, the education sector, research institutions and public authorities. As open source software, it will also be available to the community and private individuals in future. The solution can be purchased as a software-as-a-service offering via partners or operated in your own data center ("on-premise"). This enables organizations to retain full control over their data - a decisive factor for sectors such as education, administration, research and security authorities.

Open source as the key to digital sovereignty

With OpenCloud, the Heinlein Group is expanding its portfolio as a provider of digitally sovereign workplace solutions. Alongside OpenTalk, an open source video conferencing solution, OpenCloud forms the second pillar of the secure and independent digital infrastructure that Heinlein is driving forward in Europe.

OpenCloud is based on the cloud-native open source software "ownCloud Infinite Scale", which is available under free licenses and is now being further developed with new ideas and in the spirit of a reliable open source community. OpenCloud thus offers companies and public institutions a technically modern and user-friendly technology for secure collaboration and long-term file management.

Peer Heinlein, founder and Managing Director of the Heinlein Group, explained: "We are proud that we have been approached by several developers with many years of expertise who are contributing their wealth of experience to a free open source solution. This enables us to offer a mature product for excellent file management and real-time collaboration that enables digital sovereignty without compromise shortly after our foundation."

Innovation and collaboration as success factors

The development of OpenCloud is being accelerated through partnerships with telecommunications providers, IT service providers, research institutions and other software providers. The first partnerships have already been concluded. For example, the solution offers seamless Office integration with Collabora, enabling secure collaboration in real time - even with large numbers of users and large volumes of data.

The aim of OpenCloud is to create a scalable, powerful and data protection-compliant alternative to market-dominating solutions such as Microsoft SharePoint, Google Drive or Dropbox. At the same time, OpenCloud's migration support, which will be available shortly, will smooth the transition from older, php-based solutions, which are generally not suitable for cloud-native use, to a modern file management platform with a long-term perspective.

Peer Heinlein emphasized: "Europe's digital ecosystem is an essential part of our critical infrastructure and must be treated as such. Companies and politicians must retain absolute control over their data and thus over their ability to act and protect their business secrets. A company's data and files must therefore never be carelessly placed in the hands of third parties and US cloud-based providers are certainly not suitable storage locations. And current political developments also show this: The risk of falling into false dependencies here is real and massive."
